across senses
Why
compose
senses?
A brand, an exhibition or a place is encountered as one perceptual signature: visual form, movement, sound, material, scent, space and behaviour producing the same recognition across unlike encounters. The mechanism is congruence.
What each modality carries
Cue reliability decides which sense wins.
When two senses report on the same property, the nervous system combines them in proportion to how reliable each one is. Ernst and Banks demonstrated this for vision and touch, and the result behaves like statistically optimal integration.
Systematic pairings between modalities, such as pitch with elevation or pitch with size, are documented as crossmodal correspondences in Spence's review. They give translation between senses a testable basis.
